The Land of Mine: Werner's Story

In 1945, towards the end of World War II, Germany was left scarred by years of conflict. Amongst the ruins lay thousands of landmines – remnants from both sides that posed a deadly threat to anyone who dared approach them.

One such soldier was Steiner (played by Florian Laue), an S-miner tasked with clearing these mines before civilians could safely re-enter their homes and farms. These men were often young, poorly trained conscripts like Steiner, thrown into one of the most dangerous jobs in war without proper equipment or training.

The film 'Land of Mine' is based on a real-life memoir by Danish writer Kim Leónard Hansen, who himself lost his uncle during these mine-clearing operations. The book tells the story through Werner's (played by Volker Schröder) eyes – a young German boy forced into working alongside Steiner and other fellow prisoners of war to clear Germany’s northern coast of landmines.

The film follows their grueling journey as they face harsh weather conditions, limited food rations, and above all the constant threat of death from stepping on an undetonated mine. Despite these odds, Werner forms a bond with his comrades – men he was once taught to hate simply because of their nationality or race.

Through 'Land of Mine,' director Martin Bourgeois masterfully captures the psychological toll that war takes not just on those directly involved but also on civilians caught in its aftermath. The film serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of conflict and the importance of acknowledging our collective responsibility towards healing these wounds.
